Jim Simpson - Attorney - Mediator

Jim Simpson is a dispute resolution professional who brings a unique perspective to his work as a mediator. His 30 year career in industry has been almost equally split between work as a practicing attorney and as a manager responsible for a variety of business operations. He has completed extensive specialized mediation training in both Europe and the U.S. and has performed hundreds of mediations over the past 8+ years. His mediation practice is focused on business and energy related disputes, although he has also mediated disputes involving personal injury; landlord–tenant; tax appraisals; debtor-creditor; product liability; nuisance and many other matters. 

Through his experience as an attorney and also as a member of the Senior Management Team for a major international oil & gas company, he has witnessed the unpredictability of the litigation process and the impact protracted disputes can have on an organization and its business. During that time, he has acted as mediator, legal counsel and principal during disputes. This experience results in a valuable and unique perspective of the considerations of each role as well as a special understanding of what is needed for a successful mediation.

Jim is an experienced attorney having at various times held legal responsibility for litigation, marketing, transactions, business structures and regulatory matters involving many aspects of the energy and energy marketing business. This breadth of experience and the demonstrated ability to work effectively with lawyers as a colleague is critical to the overall understanding and perspective he brings to his role as a mediator.

Additionally, Jim’s expertise in helping parties to reach a resolution is strengthened by his past senior management responsibilities. He has substantial international experience having worked in Europe for 8 years in various capacities. His past management responsibilities include crude oil, refined products and natural gas marketing; profit/loss accountability for a refining and marketing business; international negotiations; commercial transactions; oil&gas land activities; and natural gas and gas processing regulatory matters.  The understanding of business considerations which comes from this experience is unusual among practicing attorneys and has proven to be helpful in relating to the principals representing a party involved in a dispute.

Jim has developed these skills and established a reputation as an excellent negotiator with the ability to bring a deal to closure. This background as an attorney and as a businessman gives a valuable and unique perspective in understanding the considerations in a dispute and in helping the parties achieve a satisfactory resolution.
